What I HATE Most About Watching Youth Sports

It’s no secret that I’m a competitive person. So it’s not surprising that my offspring is also competitive. So, after 10+ years of watching my VERY competitive daughter play soccer, I must say, I have acquired a lot of sideline experience. As a coach, I heard attitude from parents and a few kids, that were led to believe (by their parents) that they were the greatest thing since sliced bread. One thing I can honestly say is, I have never told my daughter she’s the greatest since sliced bread. She gets my honest, uncut, unfiltered, uncensored, blunt and heartfelt opinion and input even if she don’t ask. Why? Because society is full of liars. Society could care less if my kids succeed. Frankly, society prefers they fail so that the less dedicated can rise from the shadows. Society will always answer the question with a “politically correct” answer.

Now, as I sit here, watching my girls 15-16 team, I hear a LOT of attitude. A lot of ugly words. A lot of degrading tones. It does not make for a good team. It does not make it fun to watch. It saddens me because somewhere along the way, a dose of reality was sugar coated and the mouthy ones think they are sliced bread. In reality, they are in need of what my parents would call, “a good ass whipping in the wood shed”. [Glad we never had a wood shed].

PARENTS do your kids a favor, be honest with them and discipline them. It makes them better even if they are not super stars!
